Benton county

Historical Overview

Established in 1840, Benton County’s journey from its formation to the evolution of its county seat, Fowler, mirrors the spirit of its residents. The year 1840 marks the birth of Benton County, as it emerged from the area previously part of Jasper County. Named after the distinguished U.S. Senator from Missouri, Thomas H. Benton, the county’s formation laid the groundwork for a community that would navigate the winds of change with steadfast determination. In 1843, Oxford was chosen as the original county seat, but a significant chapter in Benton County’s history unfolded in 1874. After a prolonged struggle between contending factions, the county seat transitioned to Fowler. Population in 2020 was 8,719.
