In the 1845 census of St. Joseph County, Michigan, the Lees were living in Fawn River Township.
About 1848, Warren F. Lee served as town clerk of Fawn River Township. But by 1850 the Lee family had moved to LaGrange County, Indiana, where Warren was running an inn called the Lima House with the help of his son Charles. Then in 1858, Warren was back across the state line in Fawn River Township, serving as a delegate to the St. Joseph County, Michigan, Democratic County Convention.
