David was the son of Wilson Vaughn and Nancy Bowlen. He married Amanda Sullivan who was the daughter of William Sullivan and Nancy Anna Rogers. He came to Indiana about 1849 with his mother, three brothers, and a sister. They initially settled in Brown Co., Indiana where David and his wife, Amanda, met and were married. Before moving to Lawrence County, they settled in Jackson County. David worked as a carpenter, was a member of the local Methodist church, and served as a Justice of the Peace. His obituary and death notice appeared in a number of local papers including the Bloomington Telephone and the Bedford Daily Mail, both describing David and his family as pioneers of the county. He died at the age of 85.
