Stephen lived in Ft. Wayne, Allen County, Indiana, in 1861. According to his Civil War pension papers he lived in Ligonier, Indiana, 1865-1871; Kingsbury, Indiana, 1871-1884; Republican City, Nebraska, 1884-1892; and Hayannis and Bridgeport, Nebraska, 1892-1926.
From 1920 until his death in 1927, he spent his time between Bridgeport, Nebraska, and Centralia, Washington. He would go to Washington when it got cold in Nebraska. He joined Company C, 30th Indiana Volunteers on 27 August 1861 at the age of 19. He was discharged at Vicksburg 19 January 1865. He was a farmer by trade.
