Mary Catharine was a home economics teacher and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II from March 1943 to September 1945.

She was an active member of the Covenant United Methodist Church in Evanston, the Philanthropic and Educational Organization, and the American Association of University Women.
