Library Staff Educational Scholarship

IGS Supports Librarians

The Library Staff Educational Scholarship, offered by the Indiana Genealogical Society (IGS), is designed to enhance the genealogical knowledge and effectiveness of individuals serving library patrons. This scholarship supports attendance at genealogy conferences, seminars, or classes, ensuring that library staff members stay updated and well-equipped to assist patrons in their genealogical research. Award Details
  • A $500 cash award to the library employee to be used to attend any genealogy conference, seminar, or class (the credit can be applied towards registration fees, as well as food or travel expenses).
  • A one-time complimentary registration to the IGS Annual Conference for the library employee, as well as a one-time complimentary 12-month IGS membership.
Eligibility Requirements
The scholarship is limited to libraries located in Indiana and the employees of these libraries.
The library must allow public access to its collection.

The library employee:

  • must have a job that entails helping patrons with genealogy research.
  • must be available to patrons at least 25% of the time that the library is open.
  • must have at least three months of experience working in genealogy.

Library staff that are new to the field of genealogy are encouraged to apply.

Notifications

The recipient will be notified by mail and recognized in the next IGS newsletter. A certificate will be presented at the IGS annual meeting unless otherwise arranged with sponsoring library.

Duties Required from Recipient

Education must be completed within one year of receiving award at the IGS annual meeting.

The recipient must write a one page report to the IGS Board describing the educational experience within one month of its completion.

The recipient must plan to share knowledge gained by providing a service to a society or library.

The service requires:

  • Written approval from IGS.
  • Ten to thirty hours of work from inception to completion.
  • Completion within six months of using the scholarship.

The recipient agrees to serve on the award selection committee the following year.
