Joseph emigrated in 1836 from New York City. He lived at Lake County, Indiana, and then moved to Wood River, Hall County, Nebraska, in 1861. He served Lake County, Indiana, as county clerk from 1843 to 1847, editor of Lake County Jeffersonian in 1860, and census taker in 1860.
