Johann emigrated from Indiana to Caldwell County, Missouri, in 1867. He emigrated from Adams County, Indiana, to Wabash County, Illinois, in 1872. After some thirty years in Wabash County, Illinois, Johann Kirsch moved to Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota, where he continued to farm for another 20 years. A large group of relatives from Wabash settled in Brainerd about 1902.
