James resided in these Indiana counties: Montgomery, Gibson, and Pike. He emigrated from Pike County, Indiana, to Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, about 1910. Sometime between 1910 and 1913, James studied to be a chiropractor in Davenport, Iowa, and opened a chiropractic office.
