Hiram emigrated from Indiana in 1852 to Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin, where he later became a schoolteacher. He joined Company F, 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry on 29 August 1862, and served as a private at the Kansas and Missouri border. He was discharged at Ft. Leavenworth on 6 May 1865.
A member of the Society of Friends, Hiram served as minister at the Timbered Hills Monthly Meeting, Crestline, Kansas, from 1888 to 1899 and then accepted a pastorate at Holisington Monthly Meeting, Barton County, Kansas, for two years.
