Garret was about six years old when he went with his parents and 10 brothers and sisters with the Dutch migration of 150 families from Somerset County and Bergen County, New Jersey, to the Conewego Colony in York County, Pennsylvania, now Adams County, Pennsylvania. By 1790, the Dutch had again migrated, and the Cozines moved to Kentucky, where they purchased land in Mercer County by deed recorded in 1797.
