Index to Owen County Will Books 3 and 4 (1872-1897)
Preface
After a will is made and the person making the will dies, the document is taken to court to be proven. The will, and proof of the will, is then copied into a will book and the originals are filed in a packet and the packets are in the Owen County archives and not readily accessible. However, many of the wills from will packets have been made into digital images and are available on a DVD titled Owen County Wills. It remains to be seen whether or not packets have been located and filmed for all the wills noted in the will books. For that reason, the wills from the will books have been indexed separately. The index provides the will book and page number for each document.
In 2015, the DVD was purchased for $25 from the Owen County Public Library. According to information in November 2015 provided by the librarian associated with the Indiana Room at the library, there is some question whether or not copies of the DVD will remain available for purchase and the Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society who made the DVD available is now largely inactive.
The will books are stored in the basement of the Owen County courthouse and not easily accessible. As time permits, an index will be created to will books 1 and 2 and made available online at the IGS website.
