--In the Remarks column, the enumerator included information about the
male’s military service.
--The original ledger book containing this enumeration is in the Archives
of the Plainfield Public Library in Hendricks County, Indiana.

ABOUT THIS SOURCE: In 1853 Indiana passed a law calling for an enumeration
to be taken in each county every 6 years, in order to determine the amount
of representation in the legislature. Officials in each township were to
record the names and ages of all white males who were over the age of 21,
then submit their lists to the county auditor. In 1865 this law was
expanded to also include colored males over the age of 21.
