Civil War Discharge Papers

Index to Soldiers’ Discharge Papers: Civil War and WWIA number of discharge papers for Monroe County, Indiana, veterans of the Civil War and WWI are available on microfilm at the Monroe County Public Library in Bloomington, Indiana on Reel No. 177.
These records are particularly precious because a very large numbers of military documents pertaining to soldiers who served in World War I and World War II were destroyed by a fire some years ago at the facility in St. Louis where they were stored. Consequently, much of the information from the records is difficult to locate.
The discharge papers available on microfilm reveal enlistment dates and places, discharge dates and places, units in which the soldier served, battles in which the soldier took part, wounds received, ribbons/medals received and more.
This database consists of 402 records, in large part from WWI. As veterans were not required to provide the information to the county at the termination of their services, it is certain that the discharge papers for all veterans were not recorded or microfilmed.
Records from both wars are noted in Book 1. There is a Book 1 for the Civil War AND a Book 1 for WWI. Civil War records appear on a single page; WWI records are two to a page. Consequently, when viewing WWI, records, it is important to scan the entire page for a given record, not just the top portion of the page. Additional volumes of discharge records for these wars were not found on microfilm and do not appear to exist.
