Marion County Indiana Warrentwp Students 1856
Database Description
Student Lists, 1856-1865
Warren Township, Marion County
While assembling materials for the 1969 book The History of Warren
Township by the students of Warren Central High School, the staff acquired
some materials from the B. H. Beckett family.
These materials included a small ledger book created by an early
Warren Township school teacher, Thomas J. White, and included notes and
student lists from the 1850’s and 1860’s. The following student database
was copied from that ledger book.
A note from the ledger stated “Thomas J. White was born in the state
of Ohio, Clermont County, in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and
thirty three, June nineteenth. He immigrated with his father’s family to
the state of Indiana in the fall of thirty… (?)” [The latter date left
unfinished.]
The student lists range from 1856 through 1865. Some are identified
as being from Schools 2 or 3, and some are not identified as to school
site. The History of Warren Township says on page 137 that the township was
divided into 9 school districts following the Indiana Common School Law of
1851.
School No. 2 was “in the northern part of the township on Shadeland
Road,” School No. 3 was “in the northwest part of the township.”
The White ledger is in the Media Center of Warren Central High
School, and researchers are encouraged to resolve questions by consulting
the original ledger. Some of the handwriting is poorly legible.
Note: The student lists are numbered in the order they appear in the
ledger; they are not numbered in the ledger itself. We do not know of any
other student lists from this era.
