Preface to the Index of Owen County Cemeteries
The most comprehensive listing of burials in Owen County is a book published in 1983 titled Owen County, Indiana—Cemetery Listings based on information that is occasionally much older. Although it leaves a lot to be desired, it’s a great resource nevertheless. Among the faults are:
Burial inventories that are decades old
Burial index by surname only
Cemetery indices by township with no table of contents noting where those indices can be found (all burials are noted by cemetery)
Inconsistency in formatting of the information
A lack of Owen County cemetery inclusivity (it is rumored that not every Owen County cemetery is included)
A lack of exclusivity as some cemeteries in other counties are also included in Listings (a good thing when the cemetery is on a boundary line with burials on both sides of the line)
Duplication (because the inventories were made by a number of different people, the information is occasionally duplicated)
In an effort to make Listings more user friendly, without making any changes or additions to the content, an index to the various cemeteries (by name only and not burials) has been created and an index to the burials is a work in progress. No attempt has been made to verify the existence of cemeteries that may not have been included in Listings.
