1880 Mortality

1880 Mortality Schedule

Database Description

The 1880 Defective, Dependent & Delinquent Schedule was a supplemental
schedule to the 1880 federal census. It listed additional information about
individuals who had an entry in columns 15 through 20 of the population
schedule, identifying them as disabled in some way. There were seven
categories for which the enumerator was asked to enter additional
information: Insane, Idiotic, Deaf and Mute, Blind, Homeless Children,
Inhabitants in Prison, and Indigents.
The DDD Census was done by county and township. There are relatively few
entries in each township unless there was an orphan's home, a poor house, a
prison, or other institution. For Indiana’s 92 counties, the entire DDD
Census fits on only six rolls of microfilm. This microfilm is available at
the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne. The Indiana State Library
and/or the Indiana State Archives may also have copies of this microfilm –
contact them for availability.
