ABOUT THIS SOURCE: The mortality schedule was a supplemental schedule to
the federal census, and exists for the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census
years. It recorded information on people who had died between 1 June and 31
May of the year prior to the census.
The 1870 mortality schedule recorded information on people who had died
between 1 June 1869 and 31 May 1870 and consisted of 11 columns: 1) Name of
Deceased; 2) Age; 3) Sex; 4) Color; 5) Married or Widowed; 6) Birthplace;
7) Father Foreign-Born; 8) Mother Foreign-Born; 9) Month of Death; 10)
Occupation; 11) Disease or Cause of Death.
Indiana’s 1850-1880 mortality schedules are on 7 rolls of microfilm. This
microfilm is available at the Allen County Public Library and the Indiana
State Library and may also be available at other repositories.
