INDEX TO CO. G, 31ST REG'T, INDIANA INFANTRY FROM MONROE COUNTY AND
VICINITY
Submitted by: Randi Richardson

Bennett P. Reed (1892-1966), who was at one time the editor of the Herald
Telephone, wrote a narrative of the experiences of Co. G that was published
by the Monroe County Historical Society on an unspecified date. It is
titled: COMPANY G, MONROE COUNTY'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE CIVIL WAR. His
story begins when the company was organized in 1861 and follows soldiers
and their leaders until they were mustered out in 1865. The men who died,
either in battle or by disease, are noted by name within the narrative as
the death occurred and the names are indexed at the back of the book. The
index is noted below.
This 30-page book with a comb binder may be of specific interest to those
who have an ancestor fought in Co. G. It might also be of interest to
others whose ancestors fought in other companies made up of men from Monroe
County and nearby. It is believed that copies of the book may still be
purchased through the History Center. For more information, contact the
History Center at 812-355-5588.
