Lawrence county

Historical Overview

Lawrence County was named for Captain James Lawrence who was mortally wounded during the War of 1812 and is known for his immortal words, “Don’t give up the ship.” Located in the south central part of Indiana, Lawrence County was formed from Orange County in 1818. The population in 2020 was 45,011. Bedford serves as the county seat.
