Allen county was founded on December 17, 1823, formed from Delaware and Randolph counties. Its formal establishment occurred on April 1, 1824, marking the beginning of a journey that would shape the destiny of a region destined for greatness.  As of the 2020 Census, Allen County’s population soared to 385,410, solidifying its position as the third-most populous county in Indiana. Fort Wayne, both the county seat and the state’s second-largest city, anchors Allen County in a position of prominence within the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Fort Wayne–Huntington–Auburn Combined Statistical Area. Allen County’s strategic location places it within a 200-mile radius of major population centers, connecting it to the pulse of cities like Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Milwaukee. Remarkably, it stands within a one-day drive of one-third of the U.S. population and one-fifth of Canadians. This geographic proximity enhances Allen County’s economic and cultural influence, making it a dynamic center in the heart of the Midwest. The county’s name pays homage to Colonel John Allen, an attorney and Kentucky state senator who lost his life in the War of 1812.
