Bartholomew county

Historical Overview

Discover the echoes of history in Bartholomew County. Organized in 1821 from the Delaware New Purchase and Jackson County, Bartholomew County invites you to explore its rich heritage. Lt. Col. Joseph Bartholomew, wounded at the Battle of Tippecanoe, lends his name to this county, a testament to the sacrifices of those who shaped Indiana’s early history. Bartholomew County was created from the Delaware New Purchase and Jackson County. The selection of the county seat on February 15, 1821, was a pivotal moment, guided by a team of commissioners who initially proposed the name “Tiptona” in honor of John Tipton. However, the town’s identity transformed on March 20, 1821, when it was officially named Columbus. This shift marked not only a change in nomenclature but also heralded the beginning of a thriving community.
