Other Information:

Anna Elisabet “Lisa” Torstensdotter was the second child and daughter of Torstend and Brita Nilsdotter Svensson. Due to the patronymic system used at the time of her birth in 1797, her father first name became the surname of his children. No first marriage has been found in Sweden where Lisa was living; her Lutheran parish church records have been difficult to read and are likely, incomplete. Lisa did have a one day old son baptized on 28 October 1823 in Västra Harg, Östergötland, Sweden. On 4 November 1830, Lisa married Samuel Erickson, a farmer who was 13 years younger than her. They soon had 3 sons and 2 daughters; the youngest daughter died as a toddler. On 20 April 1849, Lisa’s son from her previous relationship, Carl, emigrated as a single man to the U.S.; he settled in Porter County, Indiana. On 10 May 1851, Lisa, husband Samuel, daughter Johanna and sons Anders and Samuel departed Sweden for a new life in America. They soon joined Carl in Porter County. Single son Johan Peter departed Sweden on 1 May 1854 to join his family in Indiana. No records have been found of Lisa’s death or burial location. It was likely before 30 August 1868 when husband Samuel married again. Lisa’s husband and most of her children were buried in Augsburg Lutheran Cemetery, however, that cemetery was not opened until 1870. Lisa may have been buried in an unmarked grave in Chesterton Cemetery, Bailey Cemetery which ceased accepting Swedish immigrant burials about 1866, or on private property.
