Guy’s parents were born in Indiana, but they had moved to Illinois by the time he was born. He lived there until 1900 when the family returned to Marshall County, Indiana. By 1909 he had moved yet again, this time to Lorain, Ohio. He was in Dickson County, Tennessee for awhile, but had returned to Indiana by 1917 when his son Meredith was born in Starke County.

He worked as a rigger in a shipyard, as a railroad fireman, and as a civil engineer in Lorain, Ohio. When his first wife, Arizona Baker died in 1919, he gave his children, Margaret and Meredith, to his brother Charles to raise. After he remarried, he took his daughter back, but not his son. A stroke in 1942 left him confined to a wheelchair.
