James was a teacher in Ripley County, Indiana. He served in the Civil War with the 68th Indiana Volunteers. The family left Ripley County, Indiana, for Ventura County, California, in 1887. James was a Justice of the Peace in Ojai, California, 1887-1904 and also served as a judge.
