Marcellus M Crocker

Marcellus M Crocker
b. 1830, Johnson County, Indiana
d. 26 August 1865, Washington, D.C.

Marcellus moved with his family to the Iowa Territory in 1844. In 1846 he received an appointment to West Point. Two years later his father died, leaving a large family and forcing Marcellus to abandon his military career.

Marcellus Crocker later served in the Civil War and rose to the rank of General. In August 1865, he became seriously ill while on his way to Washington, D.C., on a business trip. He reached Washington but grew rapidly worse and died. His body was returned home to Polk County, Iowa, for burial.

From: Pioneer Trails, vol. 13, #2 (June 1994), Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, p. 17.
