Historical Overview

Wabash was originally formed January 1820 out of the 1818 New Purchase from the Treaty of St. Mary’s. Numerous counties were carved out of the Wabash Purchase and the current boundaries were established in 1835. Wabash County was named for the Wabash River. Wabash is the English spelling of the earlier French name for the river, Ouabache. Population in 2020 was 30,976 and Wabash is the county seat.
