Marshall county was created in 1835 from St. Josephs county and named for US Chief Justice John Marshall. Its population in 2020 was 46,095. Plymouth is the county seat.

Census records are available from 1840 at the Genealogy Library at the Marshall County Historical Museum. Note; There is no 1890 census.
The Genealogy Library at the Marshall County Historical Museum has many different kinds of records, including cemetery indices, church records, divorce records, early civil court files, funeral home records, voter records, wills, yearbooks, coroner records, and birth, marriage and death indices.
All extant county newspapers are on microfilm at the Genealogy Library at the Marshall County Historical Museum.
